For many people, it is difficult to imagine conducting the daily business of life without the assistance of the Web and Internet. My research interest is in making this interaction among people, technology, and information even better through applied research. QCRI is the place to do this type of research!

Research Focus at QCRI

Jim is a Principal Scientist in QCRI’s Social Computing group. Active research areas are personas usuing social media data, the use of second screens, keyword advertising and online marketing.

Previous Experience

Prior to joining QCRI, Jim was a Professor of Information Sciences and Technology at the Pennsylvania State University. He authored or co-authored around 250 research publications, with articles appearing in a multi-disciplinary and extremely wide range of journals and conferences. He is the author of the book, Understanding Sponsored Search: A Coverage of the Core Elements of Keyword Advertising (Cambridge University Press).

Jim is also editor-in-chief of the journal, Information Processing and Management (Elsevier), and a member of editorial boards of seven international journals. In addition, Jim has served as a Senior Fellow at the Pew Research Center with the Pew Internet and American Life Project.
